Is nitrous oxide safe for children?
Yes! It is one of the safest forms of sedation in dentistry. It is non-addictive, and the patient remains fully awake and able to respond to the dentist throughout the visit.
How will I feel during the sedation?
Most patients experience a pleasant, “floating” sensation or a feeling of tingling in the arms and legs. Some people get the “giggles,” which is why it’s called laughing gas!
Do I need to fast before my appointment?
While you don’t need to fast completely, we recommend a light meal a few hours before your visit to prevent any potential nausea.
How long does it take to wear off?
Once we turn off the gas and provide pure oxygen for a few minutes, the effects disappear completely. You will feel totally back to normal before you leave the office.
Are there any side effects?
Nitrous oxide has very few side effects. Occasionally, a patient may experience slight nausea if they have a very full stomach, which is why we recommend a light meal beforehand.
